Why Should You Start Planting Soon?
If you plan to have a luscious backyard filled with delicious fruits, you should start planning it now, as most of the fruit trees and berries should be planted as early in spring as possible. If you start growing your goodies early, you will help them establish a root system crucial for fruit output and longevity.
Yes, if they have an established toot system, it will be easier for the plants to stay hydrated during the summer heat. This also means that the earlier you plant them, the less water they will need in the future. And if it’s difficult to choose the fruit to plant this spring, check out our top 5.
5 Fruits to Plant this Spring
Raspberries
Oh! We love berries, and raspberries are full of antioxidants making the perfect morning snack or a delicious addition to any summer fruit salad you desire. You can also plant them in summer, but we advise you to hurry up and do it in early spring for the best-tasting crops. Make sure your soil is rich but drains well, and try to plant them in a raised bed since their roots are prone to rot. Compost or manure is also recommendable if you want flourishing fruits!
Blueberries
Since we’re talking about berries, we can’t forget the healthy and mouth watering blueberries that can magnify the looks and taste of your oatmeal instantly. If you plant these goodies in spring, you should remove as many of the excess berries as you can. The fruits tend to use all the energy the bush needs to establish its roots, so keep your plant healthy and growing by picking the “extra” berries. Just don’t pick off ALL and eat some. They’re so tasty!
Dwarf Apple
If you want fruit trees in your small garden, we suggest dwarf apples. They have a gorgeous appearance, promising to enhance the appearance of your backyard, their size makes them the perfect option for tiny outdoor areas, and their fruits are so sweet and juicy! We suggest you plant them while dormant, soon, the best time being from winter to early spring. Keep in mind that the dwarf apple is suitable for cool temperate and arid zones, and it requires another apple variety close for pollination.
Tomatoes
Some think of them as veggies, but tomatoes are fruits, and they are usually the first plant any new gardener grows. If you’re up for the challenge, don’t stick to only one type of tomato. Bring more color and flavor to your garden by mixing at least three varieties. Tomatoes need plenty of room to grow, as well as tall stakes to keep them standing. Regular irrigation and protection from late frosts in spring and hot spells later are mandatory if you want to grow beautiful, delicious tomatoes.
Honeydew
Best planted when the soil is warm, usually in late spring, honeydew is our fifth favorite fruit to plant this spring. To make sure you enjoy your exotic fruit salads this summer, grow your honeydew in planting “hills” that are three feet wide and flat on top. Don’t forget to add compost or fertilizer and, when choosing, keep in mind melons do really well with manure. End the honeydew planting session by adding four to six seeds to every hill, making sure they are an inch pushed into the mounds.
