Delicious & Easy to Grow Fruits for Beginners
17 September, 2021 by Ana
Whether you have health reasons or recently became interested in gardening, growing your fruits and veggies is a fantastic idea. If planting veggies doesn’t seem too difficult, when it comes to fruits, with all the pruning, weeding, fertilizing, and mulching, many might be discouraged. However, though it seems like a very time-consuming task, you can easily grow your own fruits at home. If you choose the right ones!
And we want to help you provide your family with delicious, nutritious fruits, so we made this list of the easiest fruits to grow. They’re tasty, healthy, and need next to zero maintenance. So, read on!
Strawberries
Not only are they mouthwatering and filled with fiber, antioxidants, and other beneficial nutrients, but strawberries are also very easy to grow. With well-draining soil and lots of sunshine, you will have a beautiful garden filled with these small, red delicacies. There are several times of the year for planting your strawberries. But, the earlier you start, the better for you to enjoy them longer into the summer.
Keep in mind that, though they love and need sun, make sure you don’t give them too much when you plant them. The best time is early in the morning or late in the day. This way, there is enough time for roots to be established.
Strawberries also love to be well-watered but don’t drown them. So, well-draining is mandatory. Grow them in mulched beds for best results, or plant them in mounds to prevent having very damp soil.
Blackberries & Raspberries
Some of you might think of wildness when talking about blackberries and raspberries as they grow wild in the forest beyond villages. But, you can have these flavorful fruits in your own garden, and it’s going to be so easy to add them to your healthy smoothies or, less healthy but equally delicious, cakes.
We advise you to plant them in early spring and choose a place that is in full sun. Like strawberries, they also need rich, well-drained soil, annual pruning is necessary to keep them productive and prevent disease, and they don't react well to overwatering.
Grapes
Growing grapes might seem difficult, especially when thinking about pruning, but some successful growers have a very relaxed approach to this task, and you can be one of them. You will, however, have to keep in mind the grapes need some types of trellis or support to grow on.
Before you start planting, decide if you want to have them for eating or making wine ( there are different types!) and learn about the best varieties to grow in your area.
The proper time to plant grapevines is very late winter or early spring. Most grape varieties need a sunny location, rich soil with good drainage, and air circulation for disease prevention. They can grow very fast in the first year, but they can take up to three years to bear fruit. Keep that in mind, and don’t forget that pruning is strongly related to fruit production.
Cherries
If you want to embellish your garden with a luscious tree and enrich your fruit intake, at the same time, we suggest planting a cherry tree. It is one of the easiest fruit trees to grow and care for, with minimal to no pruning requirements and rare diseases and pest plaguing.
If you want just one tree, choose sour baking cherries or a tree with two different varieties grafted on it. Opting for sweet cherries means you need two trees for cross-pollination.
Plant your tree in the early spring or late fall, when the ground is highly moisturized, in a spot with lots of sun and good air circulation. You might dream of having it right at your window, but we advise you to avoid planting near your house as it doesn’t like the shade.
Cherries don’t like drought, so make sure you water yours regularly, fertilize it in the early spring, and prune it in the winter while it is still dormant. It can take about three years to establish, and you will probably enjoy the fruits in the fourth year.
These are our favorite fruits to grow, not only because they need little work but also because we love how they taste and embellish the gardens. Your choice will depend on your tastes and needs, on the soil, and the area you live in. Keep in mind that some, like the cherry tree, need a long-term commitment. Also, though they are easy to grow and maintain, you will still have to prune, fertilize, and water your plants. To make everything less of a chore, we advise you to invest in high-quality gardening tools and gadgets.
A watering system, for instance, is a great addition for every gardener, new or experienced, and the Carpathen Garden Sprinkler 360 Rotating might be your best option, and we’ll tell you why.
