All you need to do is choose the right flowers and follow a few basic and simple rules, like reading the plant tag or description that comes with the seeds you chose. This way, you’ll learn if your favorites are annual, live one season, or they are perennial, meaning they come back for many years. The plant tag can also help you care for your plants properly, give them the amount of light they need, and water them according to their necessities.
Keeping in mind that growing your own flowers from seeds gives you a wider variety to choose from than your local garden center, put on your gardening gloves, grab your tools, and get ready to plant the easiest flowers to grow in your garden.
Marigolds (Tagetes)
If you ask us which is the easiest flower to grow ever, we'll pick marigold. These gorgeous, old-fashioned flowers were among our grandmas’ favorites, and now you know that besides being a pleasure to the eyes, they were also easy to care for. They are annuals, come in various heights (from six inches to two feet) and colors (yellow, orange, gold, red, white), and are known for their strength, being able to survive the heat and dry spells.
Marigolds need medium moisture and love full sun, but if you live in a hot climate, we advise you to give your flowers some afternoon shade. Also, these gorgies will make your garden look like a dream of colors for a long time, as they bloom nonstop from planting until a hard frost. But, because they are annuals, you will have to plant marigold seeds each year. So, make sure that at the end of every season, you save some seeds for replanting!
Calendula (Calendula Officinalis)
If yellow and orange are your favorite colors, you should also add Calendula to your backyard oasis. Not only are they easy to plant and grow, but they will self-seed from season to season! All you have to do is provide the seeds and directly sow them in your garden after the last frost. You also have the option of starting them indoors about two months before the last frost date.
These charming flowers love full sun, but it is best to give them some afternoon protection if possible. Don’t forget to keep the soil moderately moist at all times and, to encourage further blooming, and remove all spent flowers.
Morning Glories (Ipomoea Purpurea)
When looking for a beautiful vine to decorate trellises, arbors, or a fence, look no further than Morning Glory, an annual that can completely change the appearance of your landscape.
Usually, when started from seed, it takes until the end of summer to bloom, but we have a trick that will allow it to start blooming earlier in the growing season. Instead of directly sowing them in your garden, start the seeds indoors about six weeks before your projected last frost date! After you plant it in the garden, it will self-seed and come back on its own year after year.
This is a stunning choice, especially if you want to create a relaxing dining or reading spot outdoors. The green leaves combined with the lovely flowers ( blue, purple, pink, red, or white) will beautifully upgrade your yard. To keep the plant healthy, water it once a week and use a low-nitrogen fertilizer.
Sunflowers (Helianthus Annuus)
Those who don’t mind growing flowers that start blooming late in the season ( late July-August) should consider growing sunflowers. They are so easy to care for and, when you see those superb, giant blooms emerging, you’ll realize the wait was well worth it.
Are you convinced? Find the seeds and plant them directly in your garden after the final frost. You can start them indoors, but they will flower at about the same time as those directly sown in your backyard. Remember that sunflowers love full sun, but make sure you plant them somewhere where they are protected from stronger winds. And, don’t forget, they are annuals, so save some seeds for your next year’s planting.
