If you decided to grow your own vegetables, we’d like to congratulate you! Not only will you enjoy the fun of gardening but, with homegrown harvest, also comes garden-to-table goodness and nutrition. And this is something your whole family will appreciate.
However, you might be dreaming of harvesting your homegrown foods without knowing where to start. And this is where we come in to tell you all about our favorite delicious and easy-to-grow veggies for beginners. So, just stop wondering which vegetables you should start growing and read on!
Lettuce
There are so many types of lettuce you can start growing right now, and no matter what you choose, you will be enjoying a fast-growing vegetable, which can tolerate moderate temperatures and a certain level and shade. All that, and it’s a great option for those of you short on space.
Whether you choose to pick up lettuce plants at the local nursery or you are all in and start from the seeds, which are cheap and very easy to find at any general store, gardening will be simple and fun!
Plant your lettuce in early fall or spring, and everything will go well as long as the temperatures don’t dip below 45 degrees Fahrenheit. If you’re really unlucky and experience some snow or temperatures do drop lower than expected, make sure you cover your lettuce with a sheet of plastic. They should be fine, and you’ll enjoy some very tasty and healthy salads.
Bell Peppers
To enhance your summer and fall salads, add bell peppers! They're packed with vitamins, and their taste is refreshing, especially if picked from your garden. They also go perfectly with pasta, meat dishes, and much more.
The key to growing this yummy veggie is well-drained soil, rich in organic matter, and warm temperatures. That is why you must plant them after all the threat of frost has passed! Other than that, everything is very easy.
You can either purchase them as seedlings from the local nursery or start them indoors 4-6 weeks before transplanting outside. We recommend putting them in direct sunlight, 4-6 inches apart. Don’t forget about the compost, watering them regularly, and fertilizing them every month. So easy and so tasty!
Cucumbers
Another veggie that’s easy to care for and loves loads of sunlight is the delicious cucumber. It’s perfect for a fresh salad, on its own, or in a jar as a homemade dill pickle, and it’s the best choice for small gardens since it can grow vertically.
Start your cucumbers indoors 3 weeks before planting, or get the seedlings at your local nursery. Your choice, but make sure you plant them after the last spring frost. They’re a warm-weather crop that thrives in well-drained soil with ample sunlight. We also recommend you use compost when planting!
Tomatoes
Adding tomatoes here might sound like cheating for those of you who know these are actually fruits. But, since nutritionists consider them vegetables and they can turn regular salads and many dishes into delicacies, they earn their place!
Whether you’re into tiny cherry and grape tomatoes or you prefer the big, beefy ones, these goodies are simple to grow and also enhance any garden with their colorful beauty! Not to mention you can’t compare the taste of a store tomato with that of a homegrown one…
Just like in the case of bell peppers, we recommend starting them indoors 4-6 weeks before transplanting outdoors, unless you prefer getting already started seedlings from your local nursery. Whatever the choice, make sure the frost threat is gone before you plant your tomatoes and place them in well-drained soil and full sunlight. These juicy treats hate the cold and love the sun!
Bonus Tip: Watering!
These are our choices of easy-to-grow veggies, but of course, there are plenty of other great options out there. When you decide which ones to plant in your garden, you also want to consider your and your family’s taste.
In addition, besides planting them, think about caring for your veggies and maintaining your garden. And this is where we talk about watering. Water is life, and a well-irrigated garden is mandatory. We know this can be a difficult and time-consuming chore, so we suggest using a watering system.
The Carpathen Drip Irrigation System is an excellent option. Not only is it made of high-end materials, and has a very friendly price, but it is also easy to use and customizable, meeting the needs of every garden and gardener, even if a newbie. There is no better way to end our list of easy-growing veggies than with a piece of equipment that turns chores into pleasure. Just enjoy!
